  1. “That is the problem with you Athiests, you have knowledge but no wisdom and common sense. Always learning, but never coming to the truth.”
What truth, how you know it’s true, what reasons do I have to believe your knowledge of truth, in what way is your knowledge not belief, and in what way does this knowledge and truth pertain to anything in our lives, if it so be the truth?

  2. What bothers me is when people claim to have evidence for a God and never provide any.

  3. Does it bother you to find that most of us will go wherever the evidence leads us?

  5. @issak Usually the simplest and most elegant conclusions are the hardest ones to reach. I expect neither small minded science fanatics nor small minded religious fanatics to understand what life may not about.. They don’t even see how similar they are and the essence of their actions to their nemeses’.

  6. I love that New York accent of his. He was a great man and his contributions to humankind will always be remembered.

  7. Congratulations, you just discovered scientist are PEOPLE. Some are mean, some are jerks and some are even stupid because they are human beings just like all of us. But when something stupid is published, a bunch of other scientists point that out and don’t hesitate to burn the stupid idea to ashes. That’s how science corrects itself and that’s why now we know black people are neither stupider nor smarter than other people. Because of science.

  8. Feynman was a great scientific mind, a great explorer, he makes key statements here… “doubt”, “degrees of uncertainty” not “knowing” etc. Unfortunately many who appear to admire and respect science seem to forget this- replacing it with an absolutist attitude dismissive of anything or anyone who dares to disagree…in short an attitude no much different than religious fanatics.

A malady infecting modern day societies.

  9. “some scientists say that black people are stupid”

It was science which showed that there is no such thing as a “race.”

  10. Agreed, human nature being what it is it makes sense to monitor activity which could (if taken to extremes) be dangerous. With what mechanism do you suggest we use to monitor human nature?

  11. Science is descriptive, not prescriptive. Please try to educate yourself on the difference.

    Always learning. That’s correct.

    Never coming to the truth?

Thanks for providing more evidence for the idea that Christians are brainless idiots who don’t know what they’re talking about.

Docwiz2 wrote: “Science needs to be monitored as well.”

Bullshit. Just stay out of the way moron.

  13. James Watson, co-discoverer of the double helix structure of DNA, has mentioned on multiple occasions a supposed link between race and intelligence. I think that is to whom our misguided friend is referring.

Of course, that’s irrelevant since the core of his argument is confusing science with technology and the mistaken idea that either has an inherent moral value.

Science doesn’t need to be monitored. The people who would misuse science by applying an arbitrary moral value need monitoring.

    Comment by alfapocky — July 5, 2009 @ 11:58 pm

  14. Science is a self-monitoring and self-correcting mechanism in itself. Yes, it can be taken to an extreme, like everything else, but it is the hardest thing on Earth to take to an extreme.

Always learning but never coming to the truth? Exactly, and I am proud of that!

“Some scientists” ? If you compare the level of racism between science and the general population, you will quickly come to realize that scientists are hardly the problem.

  15. “some scientists say that black people are stupid ”
Who? Name names. I could name religious racists without even thinking (ever read the transcripts of Billy Graham and Richard Nixon discussing Jews?)

“you have knowledge but no wisdom ”
We don’t claim to know the meaning of the universe – the religious do. Better to be ignorant t and know it than to be sure and wrong

  16. Science needs to be monitored as well. You have to be pretty nieve to not understand that anything can be taken to an extreme. If you don’t understand that you fail at understanding human nature.

That is the problem with you Athiests, you have knowledge but no wisdom and common sense. Always learning, but never coming to the truth.

Scientists have given us Nuclear warheads, machine guns, cloning, some scientists say that black people are stupid and want to rid the world of population.

  18. It’s telling that a brilliant man like Feynman celebrates doubt and uncertainty, while freely admitting that the thoughts of theistic belief are so far beneath that that he can’t even think himself down to that level.

  19. It’d be a bit difficult sending him a box of chocolates in a heart-shaped box then, wouldn’t it?! Well, at least it’s the thought that counts, I suppose.
Indeed it was an honour sharing the planet with him.

  20. Personally, I am quite comfortable in not knowing things that are beyond my reach. Without doubt, how can anyone know for certain what is true? Apparently there are plenty of people who are comfortable living in their isolated little boxes. I’m a bit curious what Schroedinger would say about their fates, cats aside.

  21. Many thanks for the information! It is refreshing to know that intelligence is not altogether lost in this age of apathy.

  22. I imagine Our ancient and wise Librarians held to the honour system. Whenever you assume all people to uphold this level of honour you are, sad to say, inviting disaster.
Imagine, if thou wilt, a parallel present in which the Great Library still stands. Imagine also how far advanced this parallel present must be, especially in relation to Our own present. It kind of makes you want to cry uncontrollably, doesn’t it?
If you think this is damnable, research the genocide of the Albigensian Cathars.

    Comment by Nafetitive — July 5, 2009 @ 11:58 pm

  23. We lost 2000 years by burning down that library.

2000 years before we were back at the place where the Earth travels around the Sun. Sometimes it makes me angry to think about it.

I never understood why they never copied their work and kept it in a safe place. You know, just for when a religious nuthouse came along and burned the place down.
