The French wiped it out during the Revolution, but it has a nasty way of coming back.
I don’t see it going away anytime soon, as long as people remain ignorant.

Well, compared to the world we live in, that’s nothing. Radical Christianity is growing fast in Africa and Latin America, radical Islam is growing in the Arabic states.
I hope we Europeans can stay secular.
I can tell you, I’m seeing more and more American missionaries in Germany fighting against secularism!

Great! We don’t need Religion anyway
I hope it keeps going up.

hehe religion isn’t for the 21st century folks. it’s a very old belief, I can’t imagine very many people being religious in 100 years or so.
Comment by LogandJam — March 24, 2009 @ 6:54 am
Assuming you are christian, have you read the bible lately?
Comment by mortenlu — March 24, 2009 @ 6:54 am
Okay. I believe I’ve caught up on all of yesterday’s posts. I’ll stop cluttering up this front page until I get some responses.

Quite impressive. I can only imagine what america can be in 20 years.

Both Dawing and Newton were lauded scientists of their day. Both, however, were human and therefore NOT infallible.
Darwin’s theory has grown beyond his original concept. Even if her didn’t believe it in the slightest, not believing something does make it untrue.
In fact it doesn’t even matter if Darwin’s theory was nothing but a joke he played on the world and he didn’t believe a single word of it.
What is true is true and what is false is false, regardless of origin or intent.

Very well said.

OneRealHorrorShow is absolutely correct. Unless you’re denying the vast majority of christian art depicting god as male and white with a big scruffy beard (plenty of these images can be found on stained glass or painted murals in many churches).
This image of god was not started by atheists, nor is it perpetuated by us. It is perpetuated by the history and culture of the religion.
Even if you do not perceive god this way, you are simply an exception and not the rule.

So. You only have faith that Allah, Bhudda, the Celestial Teapot, the Invsible Pink Unicorn, the Flying Spaghetti monster, John Frum, and every other religious deity you have and have not heard of does not exist?
I don’t. I have no faith, positive or negative in any of them. They simply do not enter into the equation of my life.
I do not believe in disbelief. That’s just fancy wordplay invented by thesist to confuse the issue.
I just don’t believe. I’m neutral. Neither positive nor negative.
Comment by PaxTorumin — March 24, 2009 @ 6:54 am
There is little faith involved with the equations quantum physicists have been crunching for years.
The big bang theory was the result of years of number crunching and observed galactic drift patterns determined by red shifting measurements.
No one said “Let’s start with this explanation and try to find proof for it.”
What happened was someone looked at the available data and said “wait a second, I think I’m beginning to see a pattern here. All these galaxies radiated from a central point.”

a growing indifference within america
Comment by gldmj55 — March 24, 2009 @ 6:54 am
You’re understanding of the big bang theory appears to be… close to zero.
The big bang theory has absolutely nothing to do with how life started or evolution.
The big bang only addresses the singular event of the start of the universe.
It also wasn’t “a couple” billion years ago, but closer to 13.73.
Furthermore, since the theory does not address life at all, the big bang theory is actually quite comfortable with “spilling ink on a page” and leaving it nothing but a total mess.

“agnosticism is probably the most logical conclusion. there is no way to 100% disprove or prove god.”
That’s pretty much the way everyone goes. I won’t say that there is no possibility for deities. Thus I am agnostic. Looking at the current evidence, I don’t believe that there are. Thus I am atheist.

0HI0STATE18 did not call them names.
“Retarded” it the clinical term used for someone with a mental disability. “Mental retardation,” while not a pleasant term, is medically valid and conveys no insult when used in the proper context.
I will not argue on whether or not this can lead to more happiness, but it is quite illuminating that you would think atheists wouldn’t take care of them simply by default of being an atheist. There is no correlation between atheism and cruelty or neglect.
Comment by PaxTorumin — March 24, 2009 @ 6:54 am
agnosticism is probably the most logical conclusion. there is no way to 100% disprove or prove god. so logically, we wont know. but you can say that the likelyhood of god existing is so low that you can say he doesnt exist accurately

i can get stimulated by sheer fantasy of something good! just a few days ago i was imagining returning to my old school, and the thought of an old friend popped into my mind. as he looked into my eyes i had a jolt of adrenaline and fear!
fantasy and imagination, not to mention delusion, can bring about percieved changes in thought or even the body (eg: my adrenaline release)
Comment by Pavarotti4eva — March 24, 2009 @ 6:54 am
Wrong. Atheism is the default state of everything. The word atheism simply means “without theism” or “without belief in god(s).” It is no different than the word “abiotic” or “asynchronous.”
Theism is a learned behavior; one that requires the ability of abstract thought and language complex enough to convey the concept of a deity.
Most animals have neither. Cetaceans and apes, maybe, but there is nothing in the entirety of our knowledge of these species that suggests they have religion.

It would appear you don’t really understand what the difference is between a change in one’s personal beliefs and a conscious choice.
When I choose peanut butter and jelly over ham and cheese, that’s a choice.
When I believe 1+1=2 over 1+1=3 that’s not a choice. It is a belief. One makes sense to me, the other does not. One cannot simply decide to believe something that they do not believe. That’s a paradox.
How did you become christian? Did you “find god?” Or start believing on mere a whim?
Comment by PaxTorumin — March 24, 2009 @ 6:54 am
Why is it that religious people always resort to bad analogies to prove their point?
You don’t have PROOF, you can’t argue RATIONALLY. If all you have are analogies to what you *WANT* to be true, then you have a problem.
