Let’s be honest here – Based on this posting, I am beginning to wonder how you managed to read any of the bible. BlackAce1229, meet the English language – it appears as if the two of you have never met.

  7. I apologize profusely, sir. You made your point very well, then, I would say.

  8. It was a joke — designed to show the absurdity of the position that morality comes from deities.

  9. Yeah, but the rest of humanity possess something called empathy. I don’t believe in god and I wouldn’t do those things because I have felt pain and I have no desire to inflict it on other human beings. All your statement really proves is that deep down inside, you’re a real piece of shit.

  10. I am not saying that we simply inclined to do evil. We are naturally inclined to do things that are both good and evil because of evolution (which traits ensure better survival of the species). Just as we are inclined to love our parents (a good thing) we are also inclined to tribalistic mindsets (sometimes a bad thing) or, if you are male, just beating things up (could be evil or not) etc. Also being evil is a relative concept, since our morals change over time.

  11. Then you are mistaken in using the term “human nature.” Human nature is that which is natural to humans. In order for your hypothesis to hold true, you must believe that all people are “inclined” to do evil (because this is natural to humans), and only those that are good “rebel” against this nature. Well, I take extreme offense to this assertion. I do not believe that I am naturally evil, and the good that I do is not a “rebellion” against what I am programmed to be

  12. But in the case of the Religious, even when there is a God, people do does things anyway, what’s the difference?

    Comment by Chigokai1080 — August 15, 2009 @ 11:49 pm

  13. By human nature I mean what we are capable of is probably inherent in our genes. Some people are more prone to some influences and actions than others because of genetic factors. The right conditions (environment)together with the right mindset may then trigger a specific action. This is of course just an inclination – we can still rebel against that. Those who commit evil are those that for some reason chose not to or have been otherwise convinced that what they are doing is necessary or right.

  14. “Rather blame general human nature for evil”

This is a VERY loaded statement which deserves, and in fact requires, explication. What is human nature? Remember that appeals to human nature imply that there are qualities natural to all humans- can you name qualities that, as Locke would say, “even infants and idiots” possess? Don’t forget that you have to prove that these qualities are not formed by experience. Do this and I will think about entertaining your assertion that human nature is evil

  15. It is very naive to think that the cause of most evil in the world is religion. There is a very small minority of extremists that call themselves religious that are doing this. The vast majority of religious people just want to live their lives peacefully, and many are involved in charity. Most charity organisations have religious roots. But yes, I also agree that accusing atheists of being immoral because of their non-belief is incorrect. Rather blame general human nature for evil.

  16. If there were no god, I would immediately rape and torture all women and girls. I would also pluck the eyeballs out of puppies and drown them. After that, I would rob banks and commit mass murder. Case closed.
