   I love Cat Steven’s music from his earlier times. I appriciate his contribution to the world as an artist and I am very sad that his conversion into islam meant no more wonderful songs because of some fu*ked up people who told him that music was haram. Pity.

   I think, he would inspire more people and maybe cause them to consider Islam as their religion, If he would just keep singing as he did before Islam.

   I am a Latin Rite Catholic and view my faith and the need to serve God and man in a similar light.

    Thank you mmarmash, your explanation is right. Music is not haram but it is how you use it and to what levels you take it. If your giving good message that praises Allah and teaches people about God then there is nothing wrong with that but if you use music to promote bad and encourage wrong doings then that is what Islam frowns upon and tells us to avoid.     Islam is enjoying every thing in life the right way, and enjoying anything in a harmful way to urself or others is haram, this is a main rule in islam, music is like a car , u can speed ,do stupid stuff maybe kill ur self and others the use of it this way is haram, but if u drive it safely to school or the mosque it is a great helpful device, islam is meant to make more meaning and enjoyment of our lives, damned are those how try to put limitations and restrictions to the word of alah!
